TASK
• What have I learnt in this module?
After the course of design principles, I learnt the basic principles of design: contrast, balance, repetition, harmony, unity, symbols, Gestalt theory and so on. Before learning this course, I did not have professional theoretical knowledge, and relied solely on my feelings in design, but after learning it, I fully understand the importance of design principles in design life, such as the Gestalt theory of similarity, continuity, closure, proximity, the relationship between the bottom of the map and how to affect visual perception, and how to optimize the composition through the golden ratio, the rule of thirds, and create visual hierarchy and dynamics through colour, shape, and typography. create visual hierarchy and dynamics through colour, shape and typography. All of these have given me a lot of benefits.
• What did I enjoy the most?
I really enjoyed the feeling of constantly learning new knowledge while completing the tasks step by step. There are many practical examples of visual analysis in the course, such as the analysis of the poster of the Lille International Tattoo Convention in LECTURE 6, which vividly demonstrates how to go from observing colours and lines to interpreting the cultural background, and it is difficult for us to analyse the design principles embedded in it on a daily basis if we are not dedicated to the study.
• What did I not enjoy the most?
The process of appreciating the work is enjoyable, but analysing it is a troublesome process. For example, in task 1, we have to find representative works according to the principles, and after finding them, we have to analyse what the works have embodied with the theory, I know that this is a very good way to make us understand the theories better, but the process is really troublesome.
• What have I learnt about myself through this module?
I found that before, I would only look at a piece as a whole, but there were many details in it that I didn't observe or couldn't describe accurately, which I now realise is a lack of observation.
Then there is the reliance on symmetry, I find myself leaning more towards symmetrical layouts but have a shallow understanding of the complexities of asymmetry, such as balancing the image through size and colour weighting
• What has changed and what has not in my learning journey?
Change:
Shift from ‘intuitive design’ to ‘conscious application of principles’ e.g. in Task 3, in the final analysis of the work, I wrote down in detail what design principles I used to complete the poster.
Learning to break down a design and analyse it from element to principle, e.g. looking at the colours first and then analysing the balance.
Unchanged:
The application of the Golden Ratio and Fibonacci sequence is more theoretical, but the actual operation is still abstract and requires the use of tools.
Limited interpretation of cultural metaphors for complex symbols (e.g. traditional Malay tattoos) and weak associations with abstract symbols (e.g. geometric shapes representing brands).
• What are my aspirations?
I hope that as I gain a deeper understanding of design principles and become more skilful in applying them, I will be able to better analyse the principles and logic behind good design, and learn from them to translate them into my own creative language.
Design principles are very important, but I hope I can break through the formulas and try to break the rules and develop my own personal style on the basis of mastering the principles.
