An animatic is a rough preview video made by sequencing storyboard panels with customized timing, simple camera movements and complete audio tracks. It is not finished animation, serving as an early test tool to check story logic, rhythm and emotional effects before formal heavy animation production. Its core components include four essential parts: ordered storyboard panels, shot timing, subtle motion, and audio (dialogue, music, sound effects & silence).

- Catch story flaws and structural problems at an early stage to save massive production time.
- Turn static storyboards into watchable moving clips to test four key points: story clarity, pacing speed, camera logic, and emotional delivery.
3. Standard Production Workflow
- Pre-draw clear storyboards (one core action per frame, simple grayscale tones, clear characters, numbered panels; draft small thumbnail sketches first to test story order before polishing detailed drawings).
- Export each panel as separate image files and import them into editing software.
- Arrange panels in narrative order and set rough shot durations.
- Add temporary audio (rough voice lines, placeholder music and sound effects) and adjust timing to match audio rhythm.

4. Key Core Techniques
(1) Timing & Pacing (the heart of animatics)
Shot hold duration controls the story’s rhythm:
- 0.5–1 sec: Flash frames, sudden surprises, rapid action
- 1–2 sec: Simple physical actions or character reactions
- 2–4 sec: Dialogue, decision-making scenes, emotional beats
- 4–6 sec: Atmosphere building, suspense, slow reveals

(2) Screen Direction & Camera Rules
- Keep consistent character movement direction unless plot logic demands a shift; avoid confusing sudden line jumps, and use establishing shots for location switches.
- Practical camera motions only for storytelling needs: push in (amplify focus/emotion), pull out (show scale/loneliness), pan (follow movement), tilt (display height); overuse zoom as it looks unnatural.
- Animate static drawings via position shift, scale, rotation and opacity fade—small, restrained motion works better than excessive chaotic movement.
(3) Layered Shots & Parallax Depth
Split scenes into independent layers from farthest to closest: background, character, prop, foreground, and camera frame layers. Create parallax depth by moving closer layers faster and background layers slower, ideal for travel, walking and reveal shots.
(4) Audio Design (not decorative add-ons)
Audio dictates emotion and timing; add temporary sound materials in early production:
- Rough recorded voice lines to calibrate dialogue shot length, leave brief pauses before and after key lines to highlight character reactions.

Use transitions with narrative purpose only:

1. Core Definition & Purpose
A storyboard is a sequential visual comic-style blueprint of a film, displaying every shot the camera captures in order. It acts as a practical shooting plan rather than polished artwork, decoration, or a full script.
Filmmakers rely on storyboards to save time, money and confusion: predefining all shots before production, simplifying idea communication, catching missing scenes early, and aligning all crew (actors, camera, lighting, editing) on the unified visual plan.
2. Fundamental Rule: Clarity Over Artistic Skill
Rough, simple sketches are acceptable. Messy, overcrowded drawings with unclear action and shot order are flawed. Each panel must be instantly understandable within 3 seconds for viewers.
Three core questions every panel needs to answer
1. What is visible? Characters, locations, objects and facial expressions.
2. What action takes place? Movements and events inside the frame.
3. What mood or emotion is conveyed? Tension, joy, fear, mystery, etc.
3. Basic Storyboard Visual Language
Shot Size
- Wide shot: Establishes the full setting and environment
- Medium shot: Shows character body movements

The sketch needed for the final project are divided into three scenarios.

Regarding the draft, this is my second version. The first version was revised at the teacher's request because the draft and storyboard had to completely correspond to the script in Project 1. I was missing many shots.
Storyboard
Regarding the storyboard, I used multiple shooting angles, including wide-angle and close-up shots.
I created the final animations in CapCut, adding many transitions and character movements, such as blinking and hand gestures. Regarding audio, I added phone ringtones, background sounds, character dialogue, and so on...FINAL OUTCOME

REFLECTION
1. Learning Gains from Lectures (Week 11)
This module split core visual pre-production knowledge into two core parts: storyboarding and animatic production, which built a complete pre-production workflow for my short restoration-themed script Project 1.First, I learned that a storyboard acts as a director’s visual blueprint, with clarity as the top priority rather than artistic drawing skill. Every panel must clearly show the scene’s subject, action and underlying emotion, supported by standard film language including shot sizes, camera angles and directional movement arrows. I mastered continuity rules such as consistent screen direction and matching eye lines to avoid confusing spatial jumps between cuts, and learned to test storyboard readability via peer review without verbal explanation.
Second, I grasped the full production logic of animatics, which transform static storyboards into timed, audio-driven preview clips to test pacing, camera logic and emotional rhythm before formal animation production. The core takeaway is that timing and pacing are the soul of animatics: short shot holds create fast, urgent action, while longer holds highlight quiet emotional beats. I also learned layered parallax animation to add depth to flat sketches, and that audio is not decorative—dialogue, SFX and silence directly adjust shot duration and shape the audience’s emotional experience. I memorized standard technical settings (1280×720 resolution, 24fps export) and common beginner pitfalls, including identical shot lengths, messy screen direction and afterthought audio mixing.
2. Practical Practice & Iteration of Project 1
My creative project revolves around a cultural relic restorer’s reflection on authentic restoration, exploring the value of retaining historical scars on antiques. This project went through two major draft iterations, guided by Week 12 tutor feedback that sketches and storyboards must align one-to-one with every scene and detail in the Celtx script.My first draft had critical flaws: multiple scripted shots were missing from panels, breaking the full narrative flow of the short film. I revised the second version strictly following the complete script sequence, dividing all visuals into three distinct scene sets and filling in every omitted shot to achieve full script-panel correspondence.
When designing the formal storyboard, I intentionally applied the cinematography theories from lectures: I mixed wide establishing shots to set environments (museum studio, childhood home, exhibition hall) and tight close-ups to capture subtle emotional reactions—Xu Yun’s uneasy gaze, her quiet smile at the sunset ending, and the clear crack on the Buddha head artifact. I used directional arrows and panel notes to mark camera moves (slow push-ins for emotional beats) and character movement, strictly following screen continuity rules to avoid disorienting cuts.
For the final animatic produced in CapCut, I put lecture techniques into practice comprehensively:
- Timing & pacing: I set shorter hold durations for fast-paced montage flashbacks (childhood broken bowl memory) and extended shot lengths for quiet reflective scenes (the sunset ending with Xu Yun touching the Buddha head).
- Camera & layered motion: I added subtle natural character movements (blinking, careful hand restoration gestures) and slow push-in camera animations for emotional turning points; simple layered parallax created subtle depth for background environments like rainy workshop windows.
- Audio integration: I embedded diegetic sound effects (phone vibration ringtones, studio ambient noise), full recorded character dialogue and quiet atmospheric background music in early production stages, adjusting shot lengths to match voice line rhythm instead of adding sound as a last-minute add-on.
- Transitions: I used clean hard cuts for most narrative scenes, soft dissolves for memory flashbacks, and fade in/fade out for the opening and closing of the film, avoiding overcomplicated decorative transitions without narrative purpose.
3. Response to Tutor Feedback (Week 12)
The key feedback received was that sketches and storyboards must achieve a one-to-one match with all content written in the script, with no missing scripted shots. This feedback exposed my careless workflow in the first draft: I only selected visually striking scenes to sketch and ignored transitional and reaction shots from the script, which would make the final animatic incomplete and disjointed.
To resolve this issue, I re-read the full Celtx script scene by scene, listed every single shot implied by dialogue and action descriptions, and supplemented all missing panels in my second draft. I cross-referenced each storyboard panel line-by-line against the script to verify that every location, character action, dialogue beat and plot turning point had a corresponding visual frame. This taught me a vital pre-production rule: storyboards are not selective concept art, but a complete visual translation of the screenplay—omitting any script detail breaks the animatic’s function as a reliable production preview tool.
4. Self-Identified Weaknesses & Areas for Improvement
Weaknesses
- In my initial draft stage, I prioritized interesting visual moments over full script coverage, leading to incomplete shot sequences; I lacked a systematic cross-check routine between script and sketches before submission.
- My camera movement designs were occasionally overcomplicated in early animatic tests: I added unnecessary pan and zoom motions to multiple panels, which distracted from the quiet, reflective tone of my heritage restoration story, violating the lecture principle that camera moves should only serve narrative emotion.
- When recording rough dialogue for the animatic, I did not leave sufficient pause space before and after key emotional lines, blunting the impact of core lines like Xu Yun’s monologue about preserving artifact scars.
Improvement Plans
- Establish a shot checklist workflow for future pre-production: map every script action to a panel outline before sketching, to guarantee full script-storyboard alignment from the first draft.
- Adopt a restrained camera movement standard: only add push-in, pull-out or parallax motion when there is a clear emotional or narrative purpose, and remove all decorative camera flourishes that do not support scene mood.
- Refine audio pre-production: record rough voice acting first before locking shot timing, and intentionally reserve short silent pauses around pivotal dialogue to amplify emotional weight.
5. Overall Takeaway & Future Application
This project integrated storyboarding theory and animatic production into a complete end-to-end creative pipeline, shifting my mindset from “drawing pretty frames” to “designing a coherent, readable visual story as a director”. I now understand that pre-production exists to eliminate narrative and pacing flaws early, saving massive editing and animation work later.
For future creative media projects, I will apply this structured workflow: draft thumbnail sketches to test rough timing first, create fully script-matched storyboards with standard film language, build animatics with early audio integration to refine pacing, and complete peer or tutor reviews to test narrative clarity without verbal explanation. The core principle I will carry forward is clarity first, subtle motion second, visual polish last—all animation and camera techniques must serve the core story and emotion, rather than standing alone for visual effect.
