Week 1 Tasks

- Watch 'Everything Everywhere All at Once' and analyze the clip for dubbing

- Start Exercise 1: Sound Dubbing

- Download and complete independent editing exercises

Lens Basics:

A movie consists of multiple shots, each of which should place the camera according to the needs of the narrative.

Shots are sequential images; they are combined to form a Scene, and multiple Scenes form a Sequence.

Shot Size:

Includes: extreme long shot, long shot, medium long shot, medium shot, medium close up, close up, close up, and close up.

Two advertisements, John Lewis and Unsung Hero, were viewed to practise shot recognition.

Lens angles:

Focused on 'Over the Shoulder' and its judgment criteria.

Depth of Field:

Learn the composition of the foreground, center, and background;

Master the difference and effect of deep depth of field and shallow depth of field.

180 Degree Rule

The camera must not cross the line arbitrarily, otherwise it will disrupt the viewer's sense of space.

Understand the continuity of “dynamic screen direction”.

Shooting Exercise:

Requires multiple shots with different compositions and angles, e.g., ¾ angle, low angle, eye level;

The video should be shot in landscape, daytime, with softened backgrounds, normal exposure, and with subtitles indicating the type of shot.

Editing Tasks:

Download the assigned footage for Premiere Pro editing practice, combined with watching tutorials to complete preliminary editing operations.

Step-by-step:

Watch the video and list each scene and the required sound effects in an Excel sheet.

Import the dialog and sound effects into the timeline, aligning them one by one.

There are three tracks for dialog (one for each person), four for sound effects, and three for ambient sounds.

Use Pitch Shifter to adjust tones (male to female, animal to child, etc.).

Volume recommendations:

Dialog: -6dB to -12dB

Ambient sounds: below -20dB

Other Sounds: Adjust as appropriate

REFLECTION

Exercise 1:Through this exercise, I have mastered basic shot composition and subplotting skills, improved my complete production ability, and laid a solid foundation for future video creation.

I recorded myself for the first time editing my own video, it was a very new experience for me, tuning is a very interesting process, turning a girl's voice into a guy's voice, the steps aren't that hard but if I didn't take this class I wouldn't know how to do it at all!

Exercise 2:In practice, I learned to use the “Parametric EQ” to adjust BASS, MID RANGE and TREBLE to simulate the sound characteristics of different spaces and materials. For example, to simulate the sound of a telephone, you need to suppress the low and high frequencies and boost the mid-range; while to simulate the sound of a closet, you need to retain the low frequencies, reduce the high frequencies and emphasize the mid-range.

In addition, I also learned the basic parameters of Reverb, such as Decay Time and Pre-Delay Time, and understood how the ratio of Dry to Wet affects the spatial expression.
