LECTURES
Week5 :Typo_5_Understanding
By analysing typefaces such as Baskerville and Cosmic, the complexity of glyphs and their impact on legibility will be explained. When creating a typeface, the designer must pay attention to the uniqueness and overall harmony of each stroke and avoid excessive ornamentation.
  • The details in a design are important for how it looks. By changing the details of the letters, such as the thickness of the strokes, the designer can make the design look more harmonious and dynamic.
  • In typography, letterforms must be consistent. Each letter should have simple, consistent characteristics.
  • Fig.1.1 Roman alphabet planin (25.10.2024)
  • Legible and clear letter forms are important in typography. The space between letters affects how readable a word is. Understanding the shapes and gaps of letters is essential to designing great type.
  • Design principles apply to both graphic and typographic design. Contrast is a powerful and dynamic design principle. It can produce many variations and effects.
Exercises : Task 2 Process Demo
1. The use of AI to create a cover
Fig.2.1 Cover production process (25.10.2024)
2. Change
I think my design screen is a bit cluttered, so I'm re-updating the design
I drew on some usual common design forms, using a black and white colour palette and some deployment of word placement to build the page

3. Determine the cover

Fig.2.3 typical example (31.10.2024)
4. Import id edit text
Add a grid to adjust the typography of the text, I applied the id to insert the page and cover together

Feedback :Font spacing is too large, font heights are not the same, need to adjust font angles and proportions。
My teacher's advice to me was not to overstretch the letters, which can distort them, and to be careful with letter placement
REFLECTION:

Experience:Firstly, deciding what to cover was a challenge. How to arrange the letters artistically and without confusion was the first problem to face. It is more efficient to use AI to design the cover. After importing the cover into the ID, you need to choose the appropriate font for the cover

ObservationsI find it's not as simple as just arranging or flipping the letters around, spatial order and white space is important, the space should be neither too full nor too empty, which detracts from the aesthetics of the image

Findings :I have improved my letter arrangement skills, my use of space and aesthetic values
Further Reading

There are now many books devoted to the art, design, practice, resources, and teach- ings of typography. Because of that, there is an even greater need than ever for a book like this, an all-in-one comprehensive reference guide to all things typographic.
Typesetting and typographic design delineate and define font-specific languages, terminology, concepts, principles, and processes. It began with the invention of movable type and meticulously documents the entire history of typography,
The history of fonts can be traced back to ancient Greece.
Historical forms are completely different from display types. Their shelf life is also quite long. With a few exceptions, usually sans-serif families like Univers (181) or Futura (174), which target specific markets. The history of typefaces often focuses only on text fonts for books.
