Task 1: Exercises (Vormator)

INSTRUCTIONS :

Lectures :
Week1 : INV 01
Summary of my lecture here
Talks about the importance of stylised design to help designers create memorable characters.

  • The design makes the characters engaging and helps you understand their story.

  • Black outlines make characters easy to recognise.

  • Simple designs help the audience understand the character.
  • Unique characters make an impact on the audience.
Week2 : INV 02
Summary of my lecture here
The artist uses light and dark to make the image more dramatic and show the forms of the figures and objects. The text mentions Italian painters Leonardo da Vinci and Caravaggio, who used colour and light to make scenes more important.

  • Chromatic contrast is Italian for 'light-dark'.

  • The technique is used in paintings to show depth through clear contrasts in tone.
  • Leonardo da Vinci and Caravaggio used chiaroscuro.
  • Chiaroscuro is used to make a subject seem more important.
WEEK 3 :IVN 03 - COMP 1 Visual Shots
Summary of my lecture here
Different visual lenses are described, covering different visual elements and how they affect the overall effect. These visual lenses are designed to look good and work well, offering a range of options for sharing the final result.
  • Combining rich visual elements can make the work more appealing.
  • Combines different shots to create a complex visual narrative.
  • Functionality and aesthetics should be balanced to meet different audiences' needs.
  • Use different views for the same subject.
  • The choice of shots affects how the audience views it.
100 Camera Angles, Shots and Movements in Filmmaking
Summary of my lecture here
This article explores 100 camera angles, lenses and camera movements used in filmmaking. The author categorizes them into three main categories: camera angles, lenses, and movements. Each camera angle has its own unique expressive mechanism and narrative function. For example, a God's perspective conveys the vastness of the universe, while a low angle highlights the authority of a character. These photographic techniques not only enrich the viewer's visual experience, but also create different emotional responses and narrative tensions in different situations.
  • A camera angle shows the dynamic relationship between the character and the environment by adjusting the camera position and orientation.
  • God's perspective is often used to show the vastness of the universe or to emphasize the smallness of a character.
  • Bird's eye view angles provide a panoramic view of a scene and help establish a spatial context.
  • High-angle shots are often used to show a character's vulnerability or sense of helplessness and to emphasize power contrasts.
  • Eye-level angles are the most common photographic technique, creating an intuitive viewing experience.
  • Low angle shots reinforce a character's sense of majesty and make them appear more powerful.
  • Tracking shots add momentum and urgency to the plot by moving with the character.
The 16 Types of Camera Shots & Angles :
 Summary of my lecture here
Filmmakers can make their storyboards more exciting by using different camera angles and lenses. Standard camera angles, opening views, panoramic shots and close-ups can show complex storylines and emotions.
  • The Importance of Camera Angles in Storyboarding
  • The audience will be moved by the camera
  • Opening shots set the scene and provide background information
  • Panoramic shots show the environment the characters are in.
  • Medium shots are between panoramic and close-up shots. They are used to show the characters and the environment.
  • Close-up shots show the characters' faces, which allows the audience to feel closer to them.
  • Perspective shots allow the viewer to see what the characters are seeing.
Tell Better Tales with Composition
 Summary of my lecture here
The configuration characters is paramount importance when conveying a visual narrative. The arrangement of characters can be used to convey different stories. To illustrate, a modification in the distance between the wolf and Little Red Riding Hood can influence the narrative tension.
  • Start by creating a foreground, midground, and background. Arranging these three elements in the right way can make the story come alive and look more beautiful. An example of this would be the image of Little Red Riding Hood walking through the forest with the wolf waiting in the shadows.
  • Artists use techniques like symmetry, framing, and contrast to guide our eyes and emotions.

  • The contrast technique uses different objects to show how they are different. This makes the work look better and helps the story to develop.

  • In art, the contrast between elements in the frame shows the importance of the characters. Contrasting the sizes of characters makes the story more interesting and helps the audience understand the characters better.

Exercises : Task 1—Vormator Challenge - character creation
Week 1 Pen Tool Practice
We use specific software to practice the pen tool so that it's easy to use in the future

INSTRUCTIONS

step by step

  • Used to select, move, and resize objects without altering their proportions. This will be essential for arranging the Vormator shapes.

  • Used to select individual anchor points or paths of a shape, which can help when fine-tuning the alignment or position of shapes without altering their overall form.
  • While the Vormator shapes cannot be altered, the Pen Tool can be used to add lines or additional strokes within the character design if needed. This tool can also help when combining or masking shapes.
  • A critical tool for combining, subtracting, or intersecting multiple shapes to form new elements:
  • : Combine multiple shapes into one.
  • : Cut out one shape from another.
  • : Create a new shape based on overlapping areas.
  • : Remove the overlapping portions of two or more shapes.
  • Used to combine or delete overlapping areas of shapes. This tool will be especially helpful when merging parts of the Vormator shapes to create new elements while keeping the original shapes intact.
  • : Rotate the shapes to different angles.
  • : Flip shapes horizontally or vertically.
  • : Resize the Vormator shapes, ensuring that proportions are maintained (no stretching).
  • : For precise alignment of multiple shapes, ensuring that balance and proportion are visually consistent.
  • Allows students to quickly pick and apply color, gradients, or stroke properties from one object to another.
  • : For selecting and applying solid colors.
  • : To create smooth transitions between colors within a shape. This will help in giving depth and texture to their characters.
  • Helps students organize their workflow by placing different parts of the character on separate layers. This also makes it easier to edit specific parts without affecting the rest of the design.
  • For adjusting the thickness and style of lines, if outlines or borders are applied to the Vormator shapes.
  • Although not altering the Vormator shapes, clipping masks can be used to hide portions of shapes to give the illusion of new forms or to manage visibility creatively.
  • Used to manage the workspace, which may come in handy when presenting multiple iterations or variations of their character on different artboards.
 Process :

1,Trace out the shapes given to you by your teacher for later use.During this process, I began to visualize in my mind the character I wanted to be

2,I wanted a dinosaur, so I pieced together a dinosaur with shapes, fixed shapes that couldn't be varied made this step difficult
3,
After the online draft was completed, I copied it and filled it with colors, I filled the claws and dorsal spines with white, the torso with red, and the belly with black, which is the classic image of dinosaurs in movies and TV shows

Week 3

To further refine the design, I expressed the shadow relationships in the graphics to make them more vivid.

REFLECTION:
Experience:In the first week, our teacher taught us how to use the pen tool, which required more practice. Then, we had to put together a little monster using eight shapes given by the teacher. I think this is very interesting. It's fun to slowly make your own monster and then add colours to him!

ObservationsI found that the production process was not so smooth, my lack of proficiency in tools and my lack of imagination made me stuck at the first step for a long time, and by watching the teacher's video several times, I gradually mastered the skills.

Findings :The process of designing your own character is fun, and bringing an idea to life can be very rewarding, and although the process of doing it didn't go particularly well, it turned out well and was very rewarding for me!
I added shadows to my little monster, which will make him more vivid, and I used a technique my teacher taught me, drawing inside so that I can overlay the shadow effect
Feedback :

Week 2 :My teacher said that my idea was not bad, the shape of the dinosaur was well molded, but the details were not well handled, and some of the graphic links were not well handled

Week 3 :The teacher said that the colors are a bit monotonous and some of the shadows are not quite right, I will rectify these problems!

Additional activities
The Show Graduate Showcase.

REFLECTION:Eight of us participated in this activity, the fourth group, our design concept is to highlight the cultural diversity of Malaysia, we designed a variety of races, different foods, different buildings, try to highlight their harmony, the focus of our design is on the face in the center of the picture, we will be Malaysia's common headscarf design into the representative of the Malay, as well as Chinese, Indian, etc., we think this can be We think this is a good way to show the diversity and harmony of the ethnic groups.

FEEDBACK: We spent a lot of time on the design, as well as the difficulty of coloring with colored pencils, resulting in a lot of our content was not completed, which led to the content we wanted to reflect is not fully reflected, as well as the picture of the color color is very light color, can not achieve the effect we want!
